so.

once i realised that there’s no one reading this, my guilt at not posting magically disappeared. maybe if i gain some hip, loyal readers i will feel compelled to post more, but alas that is not the case. so! here is what i have been working on, with photographs, for you hungry, hungry wolves.

first, a baby hat i made for my friend’s daughter. i tried to imitate a pattern she saw on ebay, and i don’t think i fudged it up too badly. i just learned how to do the square type stitch (ch however many, connect it with sl st, sc 4,* sk 2 sps, dc, sc 2, repeat from * for as long as you have a chain). i’m quite pleased. anyway, here’s the finished product. i’m none too pleased, but we’ll see what she says tonight.

the hat

the second is a purse i’m knitting for her other daughter, who turns 3 on the twelfth. it’s red heart yarn, yeah, i know. but she’s 3, come on. just a simple garter stitch for this one, i’m not about ready to try anything fancy.

red heart!

the third is the dreaded scarf i’m making for remy, which i promised i’d post photos of when it was done. well, it’s not, and it’s not going to be for a while, since i have to wait for jo-ann’s to send me more yarn of the same type. this is done with lion brand wool-ease in chestnut and oxford grey. and i’m not going to unroll it because it is still a work in progress and looks weird. but on the whole, it’s not so bad.

the dreaded scarf

and, lastly, a new stitch i tried today. (go me!) the lion brand website calls it “alone together” and i think it turned out pretty well. i’m going to try a few more in different colors and maybe up the size of the yarn, what do you think?

alone together!

it hailed today, as is traditional of montana in the middle of summer. maybe i’m not incorrect in crocheting wool hats this time of year, eh?

good lord

27 June, 2008 at 7:44 pm (general blah-blah)

i’ve been awful at this!  i guess the reason is i’ve spent too little time crafting… i’ve been busy as hell with work and … well, more work… and writing, as it happens.  but i’ve got another hat to make thankfully and there will be pics up soon.

in the meantime, here’s a pattern for a cute lace cap.

terrible!

23 June, 2008 at 3:35 am (Uncategorized)

am i terrible at posting… to be honest i’ve forgotten about the blog for a few days, i’ve been too busy working and making things… i finished my wool tam, well, not really a tam, but at least a large beanie with room to tuck my new dreads in; i made a hat for my friend’s baby; and i started on one for her.  this pattern is one i’m working on.  i think it’s gorgeous!  i’ll take photographs when i’m done.  i’ve been awful at that lately.

started backcombing and the hair looks fab.  would post a photograph, but, well.  no need. :)

other than that, i need to get to writing- i’ve been crafting too much lately and haven’t been writing at all.

that’s all, not a lot to report.  want a recipe?

best vegan mac and cheese in the entire world

Ingredients
1 1/2 cups of plain soy milk
1 cup of water
1/3 cup of tamari or soy sauce
1 1/2 cup of nutritional yeast
1 tablespoon paprika
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon vegesal or in lack of fancy product, just use salt
1/4 of a block of firm (not silken) tofu
1 cup of canola or vegetable oil
1 1/2 lbs of pasta of your choice preferably macaroni
a relatively large baking pan (like a brownie pan)
1 dollop of mustard (optional)

Directions:
Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.  Boil water in a big pot for the pasta.  All of the ingredients sans pasta can easily go in a blender.
Once pasta is cooked drain I and put it in the baking pan pour the  cheese sauce over the pasta.
Bake until the top of the pasta looks slightly browned and crispy, about 15 minutes, but, in the words of the author, “not too crispy because that is gross”.

happy baking.  craft pics coming soon.

time for wool hats

18 June, 2008 at 3:29 am (general blah-blah) (, , , , , , , , , , , )

so jo-ann fabrics had a sale the other day, and i went with my mom and kind of went crazy… well, SHE kind of went crazy for me, but i got to buy some wool yarn- and i made a hat that day.

the yarn brand is moda-dea and the yarn type is “cartwheel”; this is their “neapolitan” colour, and i also bought “boysenberry”. i don’t know if they’ve decided to discontinue it and that’s why it’s on sale; i couldn’t find it on the jo-ann website. they have it here on the moda-dea website though; i highly recommend it, it’s soft and thick. the hat is relatively tight, i didn’t make it as baggy as the other one because i didn’t want it to be misshapen, but i don’t have that much hair, so i can still tuck it up. this one is a single crochet; the one i’m making at the moment is with a double crochet. they sell it in 77-yard skeins; the above hat took just under two skeins. maybe i’ll post the pattern i made up for it here but i don’t know enough about crochet terms to feel confident doing so yet. :)

i also went to the thrift store today- they were having $1 clothing day- and got some sweaters to unravel. i started on one today and it amazes me how much yarn you can get from it. i’ve got somewhere around 300 yards already and i’ve only done the sleeves and the neck (it’s a turtleneck.) i plan on putting some up on etsy once i’m done with it, but i also want to keep some to make a hat because the yarn is so pretty…

lastly- i bought white wool yarn today and kool-aid! yes, kool-aid. kool-aid makes a great yarn dye- here’s a tutorial on how to do it. i’ve got so many things i want to do right now and am unable to get all of them finished, but at least i can get a good start…

i’m going to start making some toe thongs too, because i’ve taken up barefooting and want to decorate my pretty little feet.

that’s all for today; i have to finish unravelling this sweater so i can start on the next one. :) (beware doing this- buying sweaters to unravel- because you’ll end up liking the sweaters and wearing them instead of unravelling them!)

peace and love.

the hat is lost at the next cataract. tant pis- for the hat.

16 June, 2008 at 3:49 am (general blah-blah) (, , , , , , , , )

the making of the hat!

so i got off to a stellar start by NOT writing last night, yes, thanks very much, crafty hippie, we knew we could count on you. if it makes any difference, a.) nobody reads this yet, and b.) remy called just as i was ready to upload photos and we talked intensely for an hour and a half before i crashed and slept like a baby. what you see above you is the minitam as it was last night, and here is the finished product:

the finished product

smartass i-made-a-hat face

floppy tam

as you can see, it’s HUGE, but not too huge. i gave it extra room in the back so that i can tuck my hair up in it, but i didn’t want to make it enormous and round yet because i haven’t got that much hair. so it flops nicely but doesn’t hang. i’m quite pleased. and the colours are great too!

the other thing i’ve been working on is a skirt that i made out of a pair of jeans and am embroidering stuff on. here’s a sneak preview:

teh skirt

and the embroidery

the quote in the title is from tropic of capricorn, which i am ploughing through devotedly.

so that’s all the news today, as far as crafts go. i’m planning on making a halter top from a scarf once i lose a tad bit of weight, but until then i’m just going to dog along on this skirt and try to get it finished this week. i embroider SO slowly, but hopefully i’ll get better at it as i’m doing it. mon dieu! i need to get to writing again too… i took a hiatus to make this stuff but i can’t let it distract me from my one true love.

going to jo-ann’s tomorrow to buy fabric scraps, wool yarn for another tam and more yarn to finish remy’s scarf. no pics of that yet, it’s only half done and needs decoration. :)

peace and love!

my life status

14 June, 2008 at 7:16 am (general blah-blah)

so i’m spending the summer at my grandmother’s house in montana- my mom lives directly behind her, and as much as i hate to admit it, together we are three unstoppable crafters.  they have infinitely more knowledge than i do, but i have more manic periods than THEY do, so it evens out.  my grandmother is old, has dementia, and doesn’t hardly do anything anymore save for the occasional painting, etc., so i basically have the run of her stuff- and since my grandmother is a depression-era child and is an incurable pack rat, there are a bajillion things here for me to use.  i found a wooden spool today when searching for thread and clapped my hands.

my craft interests are mainly with crochet, knitting, and sewing, although i don’t profess to be good at any of those.  i like to crochet tams and beanies and i know precisely two knit stitches.  heh.  to my credit, i actually turned a pair of jeans into a skirt today and am in the process of embroidering it, so i’ll have photographs when that’s done.  i’m also considering putting my hair in dreads again, so i’m going to make a few (very small) wool beanie-tams to wear at work, so that a.) people don’t see my hair and b.) my hair can knot up properly.  they say that one way to do it is to rub your hair with wool… so i figure if i have a wool hat on and constantly massage my head, i should be good to go!

so, my current projects are:
1. wool beanie-tams (i want to make three GOODLOOKING ones to wear to work; one of my problems as a crafter is that i have great ideas but am a colour idiot so most of my stuff is ugly)
2. scarf for my lover, remy, hopefully in time for our move to chicago so he can actually wear it before cold weather sits in
3. patchwork jean skirt- all embroidery done, which knowing me will take forever because i’m super slow at it.

i’m really bad at both blogging and finishing projects, so i’m hoping if i have this i can persuade myself to write frequently.

peace and love!
